  • Swimming Hole

Alex ran down the school steps to grab his bike from the bike rack. It is so hot out! I’m glad it’s the last week of school.  He wiped the sweat off his forehead. Spotting Markus, he swung his leg over the bar of his bike.

“Markus, ya wanna go swimming with me?” Alex invited, catching up to Markus on his bike. The walkers blocked his way on the sidewalk. He rode his bike off the sidewalk and onto the road.

“Yea! Stop at my house so I can get a towel.” Markus answered, pulling into his driveway, he threw his bike down and ran into the house.

Alex watched as the walkers passed the driveway. Raising his hand to flag Jeff down while he past by. Alex watched as Jeff spun around with his bike.

“Hey Jeff! Were going swimming. Wanna come? Markus is getting his towel.” Alex stood in the driveway straddling his bike. This is gonna be awesome!

“Yea. Wait for me. I’ll be right back.” Jeff called over his shoulder, quickly pulling into his driveway to toss his bike down onto the ground. Jeff sprinted into his house.

“Where’d Jeff go?” Markus asked, picking up his bike with a towel slung over his shoulder. He stuffed a soda bottle into the bottle holder on his bike.

“Said he’d be right back.” Alex let his eye follow the walkers by the house. I hope he hurries, I’m hot!

“All right. Got one too.” Jeff stated with his towel tied around his waist. His bike still plastered with mud from the fun they had yesterday.

“Alex, have you ever gone swimming here?” Markus called over to him as they neared their destination. Their bikes bounced over the rough trail.

“Na… but it’s hot out and I really need to cool off.”

Jeff flashed past Alex as they neared the pond. They rushed down a steep embankment to stop on a small beach. Alex raced to keep up with Jeff.

“Last one in is a rotten egg.” Alex yelled dropping his bike and kicking off his shoes. He raced across the beach into the water.

“Alex, you not gonna take off your clothes?” Markus looked surprised to see Alex already in the water.

“Na…this is good enough.” Alex splashed the water all around him. He dove underwater and resurfacing quickly. The water felt good, but the muddy bottom did not. Yuck!

“Is the water cold?” Jeff asked, unsure whether to jump right into the water like Alex did.

“Na… it’s great. Come on guys!” Alex called to them. He flipped this way and that way in the water.

Alex saw Markus dive into the water with a splash. Then he saw the movement from the corner of his eye.

“Woo ho!” Alex pointed to a log floating near by where they swam.

“Aw Man, look at that turtle!” Jeff shouted spotting the turtle sitting on the log.

“Its huge!” Markus carefully moved away from the log.

“Isn’t that a snapper?” Jeff asked moving behind Alex.

“Get that stick for me!” Alex called to Markus.

“What are ya gonna do man?” Jeff sounded fearful of the turtle’s sharp beak.

Markus made his way closer to the shore. He picked up the thick stick and swam back to Alex. Handing it to him, he moved out of the way.

“Check this out!” Alex shoved the stick toward the turtle’s mouth.  The sharp jaws latched onto the stick. The stick snapped in half.

“Oh wow, did you see that?” Markus shouted excitedly. He had moved closer to the shore.

“Yea! It snapped that stick right in half!” Alex smiled. Look at those puppies run from a little old turtle! Alex found his friends amusing.

“I don’t think I wanna swim in here with that thing! I’m getting out.” Markus stated as he made his way onto the shore.

“Yea! Me too!” Jeff agreed, quickly following Markus.

“Aw come on guys, don’t let that turtle scare you!” Alex wined. They are such sissies!

“E uw …what’s that all over you?” Jeff pointed to Markus’s back.

“Leaches!” Markus screamed looking over his shoulder. “Ah! Get ‘em off me!”

“Arg! Their on me too!” Jeff panicked. His legs covered with the squirmy black things.

“Alex, get out of the water. It’s loaded with bloodsuckers!” Markus yelled as he plucked the squiggles off him.

“Bloodsuckers! Ahh! Their all inside my clothes” Alex screamed, quickly running out of the water while yanking off his clothes.

  • Crafty Discovery ~ Scene 2

“Hey Bill! What is he pointing at?”

“Tim, maybe you are sitting in his seat. Maybe you should like move out of his way so he can fly this thing.”

“I think he wants me to push another button.”

“I don’t think you should be pushing anymore buttons, Tim.”

“No, look. He is pointing to the control panel. There is just one button I didn’t push yet. I wonder what it could be.”

“Tim, don’t be pushing anymore buttons… just get out of his seat and let him take over. You have gotten us in enough trouble.”

“You sure you want him to touch that? He doesn’t even know how to read your language.”

“Bill, it is too late. I just pushed the button.”

    “Great Tim, just great.”

“I don’t know who you are or why you took my ship, but we are in root to return to my mother ship. When we board I will find out what to do with you two.”

“Oh my God! Bill did you hear that? He spoke to us. Was that some type of translation button?”

“Yes one who pushes too many buttons called Tim.”

“Heh… Tim he was talking to you!”

“Fearful one.. Called Bill.. Me and my people do not eat your kind. And I will not dissect you.”

“Well that is a relief! Can you turn this thing around and take us home? Please!”

“No I can not do that. The magnetic pull to the mother ship has been engaged. I can not stop the process now. We must dock and a decision will be made as to what to do with you.”

“Tim this is messed up. You owe me for those ballgame tickets.  That was suppose to be a great game.”

“Oh right, the Rangers vs. the Reds? You act like it was suppose to be the Yankees or Red Sox.”

“Well for your information, it was the Rangers vs. the Red Sox. I paid a lot for those box seats.”

“You bought box seats? Where did you come up with the money for box seats?”

    “I sold my lawn tractor.”

“I was gonna borrow that this week.”

“Well now you’ll have to use your wife’s scissors.”

“Shit, Bill, you don’t have to be that way.”

“We will be docking in a minute. You need to remain calm. Stop fighting!”

“You better keep him from touching anymore buttons. He is liable to send the mother ship back to your homeland.”

“Bill, will you drop it for now. I won’t touch anymore buttons. Look I will keep my hands in my pockets.”

“You both stay here. I will be right back. I must let them know you are aboard.”

“You couldn’t just call them up on the TV screen and let them know we are here?”

“Hey Bill, if I hit the right button, maybe we can turn this thing around and go back home.”

    “Leave them alone, Tim!”
“They will see you now. Follow me.”

“Sir, these are the Earthlings who started the ship and activated the magnet draw to the ship.”

“Ah yes! Earthlings! What to do with them. Hmm… You say one likes buttons? We can leave him with the droids. What to do with the other.”

“Fearful Bill likes ballgames of Rangers vs. Red Sox.”

“Well then take him to the arena, but watch him closely. Don’t want him stealing home.”

“Um… Tim, where are they taking us?”

    “Hell if I know.”

“Hey translator! What did he say back there? Where are you taking us and when can we go home?”

“Tim the button pusher will stay here. And you are to come with me.”

“Great Tim! Now they are splitting us up. You better figure out a way to get us out of here and get us back home.”

“I will do my best Bill.”

  • Choices ~ Chapter 4

    “Karla? Are you up?”

Her Mom’s voice vibrated through her body, shocking her out of a sound sleep. She rolled over to glance at the alarm clock. Arg!

“Yea!” Karla answered. She rolled over in her bed pulling the blanket over his head. Why can’t she just let me be.

“Do you want anything for breakfast?” Her Mom bellowed through the closed door.

“No Mom!” Karla growled in annoyance. She sat up in the bed to be reminded of the move and the new school. Unpacked boxes were piled along the wall of the room.

“How ‘bout a hot chocolate?” Her Mom prodded.

“No Mom!” Karla growled again. Getting out of bed, she made her way over to a box marked clothes. Popping open the box, she rummaged through the clothes for a top and pants. The socks were in the bottom box. Ugh!

“Glass of Milk?” Her Mom offered.

“No Mom!” Karla groaned. Why can’t she just wait for me to get dressed. I hate it when she bugs me like this.

    “Coffee?”

“NO MOM! I’m getting dressed and I’ll be out in a minute.” Karla snapped.

“Well you don’t need to talk to me like that! I just wanted to fix you something before you go to school.” Her Mom wined.

“I don’t need or want anything.” Karla felt annoyed with her Mom’s constant badgering.  Karla slipped into her shirt and pants. She snatched a pair of socks from the bottom box and shoved them onto her feet. Jamming her feet into her untied sneaker, she left her bedroom. Her untied laces clicked on the wood floor as she walked.

“OK! I offered” Her Mom called from the kitchen.

Karla shuts her bedroom door behind her. She entered the kitchen and took a couple of slices of bread. After slipping them into the toaster, she grabbed a glass and poured herself some juice.

“I thought you didn’t want anything.” Her Mom pestered.

“Ehh! I changed my mind. K!” Karla growled. Why don’t she just leave me alone!

“What’s with the attitude?“ Her Mom chided. “You better change it!”

“God! Mom! I don’t have an attitude! Just stop bugging me!” Karla wined.

Karla moved away from the kitchen sink so her Dad could set his empty cup down. She sat down at the breakfast nook. Eating her toast, while watching her Dad step in-between her and her Mom.

“Karla, there is no more riding the bus. So, you have your choice this morning. You can either walk to school or I can drop you off on my way to work.” He volunteered as he straightened his tie.

Karla thought he looked so funny wearing a suit and tie. She snickered to her self while she watched him try to button up his suit coat. The buttons over his stomach looked like they wanted to pop.

“K, Dad. I’ll ride with you this time.” Karla answered happy to escape her Mom’s pestering. First day jitters began to form in her stomach. She nibbled another bite of toast.

“Well you need to get your things then, cuz I’m leaving now,” He announced. Picking up his briefcase he headed toward the door. Pausing to pick up his lunch bad and coffee as he headed out the door.

“Ahh. I just made the toast.” Karla stammered.

“Drink your juice quick. You can take your toast with you and eat it in the car.” He headed out the door after kissing her Mom goodbye.

“Ok. Coming!” Karla grabbed her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. Quickly she drained her glass of juice and placed the empty glass in the sink. Wrapping her toast in a paper towel, she headed out the door and got into the car.

  • Choices ~ Chapter 3

    Thursday

    ________________________________________________________________________

“Ok, that was the last box.  Every one in the truck and wave good bye.  Karla, your gonna just love your new room.” Enthusiasm in her dad’s voice.

“Dad, I loved my old room.” Karla wined. “Why can’t I keep my old room?” Karla climbed into the back seat of the moving van.

“Just give it a chance Karla!” Her Mom chided as she climbed into the passenger seat closing the door behind her.

Karla threw herself back against the seat and scowled. Why does she have to be such a friggin’ witch!

After driving for about a half an hour her dad announced as he drove into town. “This is it, your new town.  Over there is your new school, Brantwood High.” He pointed out. “There’s the mall and movie theater.” He announced again, “Library…. And over there is the bowling alley.  And we’re almost there.”

“Mom did you ask Dad about the cell phone?” Karla leaned forward against the front seats so she could see the landmarks of interest. She gave her mom a quick sneer behind her back.

“I haven’t had a chance too, we have been so busy!” Her mom sounding annoyed by Karla’s badgering.

“Karla, I will look into getting you one.  But, only if you promise to stop complaining about the move!” Dad responded fustrated by Karla’s wining, and his wife’s annoyance.

Karla watched as her dad pulled into the left turn lane at a stop light. The bustle of the town activity of cars and pedestrians had her attention.

Her dad turned the corner and announced, “this is our street!”

Driving a bit down the street to pull up in front of a driveway.  Her Mom’s blue sedan sitting in the driveway.  Mom’s already been here today?  I wonder what time they got up?

“Here is the house,” her Mom announced.  “ I’m gonna take a quick trip to the store to get us something for supper.  Karla, you stay and help unload the boxes.  Dad has to get the moving truck back before 9 tonight.”

“Ehhh!  Can I at least see the pool first?” Karla cranked.

“Its around back, hurry back we have a lot to do and not much time.” Dad pulled out the ramp on the truck and opened the door. Grabbing the hand truck he took a stack of boxes off the truck and into the house.

“Ya! I’ll be right back Dad. I just want to take a quick look.” Karla made her way out behind the house. The pool took up a portion of the backyard, surrounded by a tall fence blocking her vision of the neighborhood. Noting the pool was empty of any water, Karla headed back to help her Dad with the boxes.

“Dad, how come there’s no water in the pool?” Karla asked as she grabbed some of the boxes off the truck.

“The last owners drained it last fall.  The house has been empty since winter.  We’ll leave it empty too for now.” Her Dad explained. “We’ll fill it next summer. Have it ready for Memorial Day. OK?”

“Yea.” Karla accepted her Dad’s reasoning. “Mom’s back already? That was quick!”

“Karla the store is right up the street. Can you take these boxes and stick them in the kitchen?” Her Dad piled some smaller boxes onto her arms.

The house is nice, and a pool too. I hope there are kids around here that are my age. Karla stepped up on to the porch and carried the boxes into the house.  Looking around as she entered the sunken living room of what must have been a garage at one time.

Stepping up the steps leading to the kitchen and the rest of the house, Karla asked, “Mom, where do you want me to put these?”

“Right over there.” Her Mom motioned to a corner of the room where the dinning room table would be going.

“Where is my room?” Karla asked, placing the boxes down on the floor.

“You go get another load and I will show you your room.” Her Mom bargained.

Seeing the case of soda on the counter, Karla grabbed one for her and her dad. “K” Making her way back through the living room, stopping to take a quick peek at it.  Happy to see the fireplace, she skipped out the door bringing the soda for her Dad.

“Thought you might like something to drink.” Karla handed him his drink.

“Thanks.” Her Dad accepted the soda, cracking the tab and waiting for the fizz to settle before taking a sip.

“Dad, where is my stuff?  I’ll put it in my room.” Karla asked setting her soda down on the porch. Looking across the street she saw a group of teens standing watching them move in to the house. Well, maybe they should take a picture. It lasts longer. Conscious of eyes on her, she quickly got back to helping her dad.

“That pile over there. Here take these too… you can drop them off in the living room on your way.”

“K” Taking some of the boxes from the stack she hurried back into the house. Motivated by the onlookers from across the street. I wonder what grade their in.

“Mom, where do you want these?” Karla asked showing her the boxes she carried.

“Oh just leave them over there.” Her Mom pointed to a spot in the living room void of any boxes.

“Can you show me my room so I can put my stuff in it?” Karla asked feeling calmer now after seeing teens in the neighborhood.

“Down the hall way on the right.” Her Mom busy putting dishes away.

“K. Thanks” Karla called over her shoulder as she headed down the hallway.

Finding her room, her bed already set up in her room. Surprised to see her things had been somewhat unpacked and set up for her. She set her boxes down on the floor by her bed. A package caught her eye. Sitting on her pillow just waiting for her, wrapped neatly in gift wrap.

Picking up the package, she saw the note card. She read the note card. We hope this helps you with your transition to your new school…. Love Mom and Dad.

OMG…Did they really? It can’t be! Karla ripped the gift wrap off the package. Jumping for joy at what she saw inside. She ran to the kitchen to see her Mom.

“You got me a cell phone?  Oh my God!” Giving her Mom a big hug. Karla, ecstatic with excitement.  “Thank you …Thank you so much Mom!”

“Don’t thank me… thank your Dad….  He picked it out last night.” Her Mom returning the hug. “But, I do hope you like it.”

Karla ran to her dad as he came into the house with another load of boxes on the hand truck.  Giving him a hug after he placed the boxes in the living room. “Dad, thank you for the phone!  I got to call Sarah!”

“Your welcome, but don’t do that now…Help me would you!  We have to get all this stuff into the house before it gets dark. You can call her later.” He urged her.

    “K”

  • Choices ~ Chapter 2

“Jan, this ambrosia is really good,” Karla stuffing another fork full into her mouth.

“ Can I get the recipe from you before I move?” She felt a bit better about moving today. I really hope she spoke to my folks. Standing, Karla held a bowl of ambrosia, eating it slowly to savor the taste.

“Karla, I’m glad you like it.  I’ll give it to you only if you give me the recipe for those pickles you made.” Jan smiled.

“Oh, those pickles are easy.  Just take Dill pickles and coat them with cream cheese and wrap them up with dried beef.  Chill them for a couple of hours and then slice.  That is how easy they are to make.” It’s such an easy recipe, anyone can make them. Karla returned Jan’s infectious smile.

“All right, but I have to write mine down cuz I can’t remember the recipe right off the top of my head like that.” Jan snickered.

“Ha!  Maybe I should write pickle the recipe down for you incase you can’t remember my three simple ingredients.” Karla teased Jan over her forgetfulness.

“Brat!  Ya you better! I’m not getting any younger,” Jan gave Karla a prudish look.”   I forget stuff all the time.  Not just recipes.”

“Ha ..Ha ...Ha.. Ha!  You know I’m just kidding,”  Karla laughed. “But I will write it down anyways.” Karla decided to change the subject, “Speaking of forgetting, did you remember to ask my mom about letting me have sleepovers?”

“Ya, I did.  She thinks sleepovers are a great idea.  She said she is surprised you have not asked to have any since you were in first grade.  She thought you didn’t like sleepovers.” Jan took a bite of her hotdog.

“All right then!  I will ask her the first week we move in.  She better let me have one or I’m moving in with you!” Moving closer to the trash, Karla pitched her empty bowl in the barrel. That was good!

“Relax.  I’m sure she will let you have your friends over,” Jan reassured Karla. “ Maybe even some pool parties,” Jan brought up the pool again.  “I hope someone remembers to invite me to them,” Jan nudged Karla’s shoulder.

Wondering if her parents showed the property to Jan, she asked “How big is the pool?”

“I don’t know.  I’m sure it is decent sized. Oh Look!  Sarah, I’m so glad to see you.” Jan greeted Sarah.  “Is Jody coming by too?  I better let you kids chat.  I’m gonna go mingle with the adults now.  C ya later with that recipe.”

Nodding to Jan, Karla then turned her attention to her friend Sarah. Where is Jody? She said she would be here.

“So, Karla, your folks are really gonna do it?  Your moving?  Dam!  Who are we suppose to hang out with down at the pond.  Jody got the job at the market, so she can’t come by today.” Sarah complained. She grabbed a hotdog from the picnic table laden with food.

Karla took a soda from the cooler near the table. Cracking the tab and waiting for the fizz to settle. Ahhh! She placed the can against her skin feeling its cool surface on her forehead.

Karla made her way to the shade of a tree. Sarah followed, sitting down on the ground beside her. Setting her soda down on the ground before her. Karla plucked a blade of grass.

“I can’t believe this either, Sarah! My folks didn’t even discuss this move with me.  Its like they don’t care about what I think or what I want.  I don’t want to go to a new school.”

Placing the blade of grass between her thumbs, she blew making the blade buzz. Karla began to feel sullen about moving again. Why can’t they just go with out me?

Sarah snapped up a dandelion from its base. She began twirling it between her fingers looking deep in thought. “Its gonna be so boring around here with out you.”

“I’m gonna ask my mom if I can have sleepovers after we get moved in.” Karla discarded the grass blade and plucked up a buttercup. She removed the petals one by one. Then tossed the mangled flower onto the ground.

“How far away are you moving?” Sarah asked while leaning back, propping herself up with her hands extended back.

“We‘re moving to Brantwood, or so they say.  I don’t understand why Dad just can’t travel to work like most people do.  This really rots…..I have to pack my things change schools and unpack my things.  I’ll never find any of my stuff.” Karla brushed the grass from the palms of her hands.

“I need another soda, want one?” Standing, Karla waits for Sarah to follow.

    “Ya, I’ll grab another one.”

“Did I hear Jan right, you guys are gonna have a pool?”

“Ya, so my folks say.  I haven’t seen it yet.  I haven’t even seen the house yet…Like it is some big secret or something.  They never talk to me.  If this don’t work out I’m skipping out.  I’ll move back here and live with Jan.”

Karla tosses her can in the trash as Sarah hands her another one from the cooler.

“Well it can’t be that bad…..that town is really big.  It‘s got a movie theater, bowling alley and best of all a Mall!”

    “Ya, I know!”

“And you got a pool?  How far are you from the school?  Can you walk to the Mall?” Sarah takes a swig of her soda.

“Ya, I can walk to school and the Mall ..though I doubt Mom will ever let me hang out at the Mall.”

“Well, when Jody and I sleep over, we will ask her if we can all go to the movies and hang out at the mall.  I will get my mom to talk to her for you. K?”

Karla glances to see her mom is standing with a group of adult family friends. “She never lets me do anything. You know that.”

“Your school must be huge compared to ours.” Sarah frowns changing the subject. “Did you pick your classes yet?”

“I’m going tomorrow to pick my classes and see the school. I hear the school is like triple the size of Medam High.”

“Hey, take your camera with you or better yet send me a picture message when you check out your school.”

“Why, did you got a cell phone?”

“Ya, I got it for my birthday.” Sarah pulls her cell phone from her back pant pocket.

“Oh cool!  Let me see!” Karla takes the cell phone, opens it. Checking the phone functions and numbers.  “Now I have to ask my folks for one.  They should be able to afford one now. And they owe me, since they are making me move and leave my friends behind.”

“I gotta show Mom.” Karla takes the cell phone to her Mom, with Sarah in tow.

“Mom!  Check out Sarah’s new cell phone she got for her birthday!”  Karla holds the phone out for her Mom to see. “Can I have one too?”

“We will have to talk it over with your Dad later.” Her Mom quickly glances at the phone and then turns back to her current conversation.

“Ya, right Mom!” Half the time she even forget I exist. I hate it when she does that. I’m gonna start blowing you off. Karla fought the urge to flip her mother off.

“Hey I got to get going.  I have to meet Barry at the town field for soccer practice.  Here is my cell phone number.” Sarah reached into her front pocket producing a piece of paper.   “I got to run or I will be late.  Talk to you soon.”

Numb with anger at her Mom’s response, Karla excepts the piece of paper. She stuffs it in her pocket. Watching Sarah turn to head to her car. “C ya!” Karla calls after Sarah as she reaches for her car door.

Frustrated by her Mom’s response, Karla gives the dirt a quick kick with her foot. Shaking her head, she heads inside the house.

Feeling fed up, she enters her room, slamming her bedroom door behind her closed. Flicking on her stereo to a Hip Hop radio station. She turns up the volume, trying to drown out the sounds of the party.

Throwing herself onto her bed face first. Karla buries her face into her pillow and begins to sob. Nobody cares what I want!
